The Basics

My dearest Rebekah,

I believe it is imperative that you know something about your mother:  she cries.  Mostly at romantic movies, touching stories,  cute things that I say, and when she reads these letters that I have been writing to you.  Now, do not be mistaken,  I love the fact that your mother is an emotional person.  It is one of her best qualities.  The pride she feels for others when they succeed, the concern for a friend going through a tough moment, and the shear joy she gets when thinking about you, make me fall more in love with her every day.  But, I have decided to write you a letter that will be void of tears for your mom... I hope.  So here goes.

American football is a game derived from the English sport of rugby.  It is the greatest game on the face of this planet, and you and I are going to spend most Saturdays in the fall watching this beloved sport.  I feel that it is necessary for you to know the basics.

First things first: Our allegiance to a team does not start with a win and will not end with a loss.  The LSU Fighting Tigers,  New Orleans Saints, and McNeese State University Cowboys are the greatest teams and will win the championship every year.

Second: Unless the aforementioned teams are playing, we just desire a good game and/or for Alabama, USC, Ohio State, and Oklahoma to lose.

Third:  It is always just a game.  I am not sure what sports or clubs you will want to be a part of. Always  know that no matter what the sport or competition you are involved in, at the end of the day, God and I will still love you.

Lastly:  The qualities that make a good athlete (hard work, dedication, perseverance, respect, and love of the game), also make a good follower of Jesus Christ.

I felt you moving in your mother’s womb for the first time yesterday. And, I am so excited to meet you, to go on walks with you, to teach you to ride a bike, to have tea parties with you, and to hold you in my arms as we enjoy Saturdays in the fall.  Keep growing healthy and strong,  and always know that I love you very much.
